On Sunday, RFK Jr. went on CNN and declared that Anthony Fauci “was lying about everything.” He claimed that Fauci lied specifically about masks, social distancing, natural immunity, vaccine transmission and the origin of COVID-19. The ignorance of the current US Secretary of Human and Health Services is staggering. He lacks the 9th grade understanding of the scientific method and how peer reviewed studies work. He consistently cherry-picks those few studies that seem to partially support his positions, while rejecting all others as being corrupted by the very businesses that he was paid millions by when he was a practicing attorney. It is not obvious that he has ever gotten past the abstract of a published academic article. This piece wasn’t originally intended as a polemic against RFK Jr., but his unhinged, vitriolic tirade on CNN justifies a clear stance on how ignorant and idiotic he is.
One of RFK Jr.’s qualms with Fauci is that the Presidential Medal of Freedom-winning MD amended his recommendations for mask-wearing and social distancing in public settings during the pandemic. Somehow, the Secretary is incapable of understanding that the conditions of the pandemic were not identical from its start to its finish and, specifically, that varying strains across its lifecycle and rates of immunization meant changes to existing public health practices were required.
RFK’s tirade is just part of a broader MAGA media strategy. Rand Paul revealed 1,141 pages of Fauci’s pandemic-related diaries, subpoenaed Fauci, and staged a hearing around demands that he be imprisoned. Trump promoted the hearing and denounced Fauci’s ideas as “CRAZY.” Ted Cruz demanded contempt, perjury charges and jail. And RFK Jr. carried the story onto CNN four days later. Public choreography reveals a functionally coordinated effort by the administration, Republican senators and the MAGA media ecosystem to drag the country mentally back into 2020 before the midterms.
The strategy is a response to the current disaster in the US. Consumer prices were 3.5% higher in June than a year earlier. Grocery prices are ballooning. The national gasoline average stood at $4.10 in late July, almost 32% above its level when Trump returned to office. Labor-force participation fell from 62.6% in January 2025 to 61.5% in June 2026, the lowest rate in half a century outside the pandemic shock. Job creation slowed to 716,000 over the administration’s first seventeen months, and that is even before the revisions have come in.
Tariffs have become a measurable source of pricing pressure. Federal Reserve researchers estimated that tariffs implemented through November 2025 raised core-goods prices by 3.1% through February 2026 and accounted for all excess core-goods inflation above the pre-pandemic trend. Consumers still encounter tariff costs in imported products and domestic supply chains. Real weekly earnings have risen 1.3%, but that is well below the massive increases to food and fuel costs, and the weaker labor participation.
On-duty federal immigration agents have shot and killed at least seven people, including U.S. citizens Ruben Ray Martinez, Renee Good and Alex Pretti. The extrajudicial killings have gone unpunished and appear to be uninvestigated federally thus far. Trump’s U.S.-Israeli war with Iran has killed eighteen American service members, wounded more than five hundred and cost taxpayers at least $37.5 billion so far. The conflict also pushed global oil prices higher.
Present failures produce daily evidence at checkout counters, gas pumps, recruiting offices and military funerals. What MAGA’s Project COVID Hail Mary hopes to accomplish is to tell Americans that things were worse under Democrats with Fauci being the major scapegoat. Pandemic revisionism is rooted in old briefings, changing recommendations and technical disputes that few people can reconstruct clearly from memory. When RFK Jr. and others say “Fauci lied about everything,” they force defenders to explain five years of science and understanding, which many Americans don’t have the attention spans for. Right-wing media treats every explanation as an attempt at evasion and any uncertainty is viewed as a confession. They want to control the media agenda by simplifying a false message about the pandemic. Hours spent relitigating issues of masks and social distancing are hours diverted from tariffs, Iran and immigration enforcement.
Pandemic memories are grounded in grief, anger, loneliness, lost schooling, business failures, institutional arrogance and real policy mistakes. A political movement can reactivate those injuries more easily than it can reduce grocery bills or explain dead soldiers. Fauci serves as the ideal vessel because he became the face of expertise while lacking the power of a president or governor.
RFK Jr.’s account requires the public to misremember that Trump was president when the pandemic hit in 2019, through 2020, and into 2021: its worst years. Trump’s White House issued “15 Days to Slow the Spread,” advised vulnerable Americans to stay home and told entire households to remain home when someone tested positive. Trump extended federal distancing guidance through April 30. Republican governors imposed enforceable restrictions under their own authority. Greg Abbott ordered Texans to remain home except for essential services and activities throughout April and kept schools closed until at least May 4. Fauci advised but the president and governors decided.
RFK Jr.’s accusations are also built on lies. Fauci’s diary does not reveal a private lab-leak confession. A January 2020 entry described the Wuhan market as an amplifier and recorded a likely animal-to-human jump. Weeks later, Fauci used almost the same formulation publicly. The World Health Organization’s 2025 review kept all origin hypotheses open because China had withheld crucial information, while concluding that available evidence favored zoonotic spillover.
Led by Trump, early federal messaging was confused and poorly communicated. Recommendations changed as evidence developed. Later findings supported broader use, especially of well-fitted surgical masks and respirators. Current CDC guidance states that a well-fitting mask or respirator reduces SARS-CoV-2 transmission. A CDC study found consistent indoor masking associated with substantially lower odds of infection, with the strongest protection from N95 or KN95 respirators. Cloth masks performed less reliably. The record supports criticism of early communication. Kennedy’s claim that masks were simply a lie is false.
Similarly, social distancing was effective when actually practiced. Temporary reductions in close contact slowed transmission and bought hospitals time during waves that threatened beds, intensive-care units and ventilators. Modeling of the Austin area found that immediate, extensive distancing was needed to keep cases within local hospital capacity and that a two-week delay risked an ICU-bed shortage.
RFK Jr.’s natural-immunity accusation is equally misleading. Fauci publicly acknowledged that infection could produce protection. His reservations concerned its durability and reliability across people and variants, along with the danger of acquiring immunity through a disease that could kill or disable. Recommending vaccination after infection reflected evidence that added protection could help. RFK Jr. converts a dispute over duration, risk and policy into a fictional claim that Fauci denied natural immunity existed.
Among nursing-home residents, mRNA vaccines were estimated to be 74.7% effective against infection before Delta and 53.1% during Delta. Household studies found reduced onward transmission after vaccination, followed by waning protection as variants changed. Claims made in one phase were not entirely applicable in other phases. A 2025 JAMA Health Forum analysis estimated that vaccination averted about 2.5 million deaths worldwide from 2020 through 2024, mostly among older people. “Fauci lied about transmission” mistakes changing information about a changing virus into a set of contradictions that simply don’t exist in context.
RFK Jr. expanded the conspiracy during the same CNN interview. He asserted that COVID and many other pandemics clearly came from gain-of-function research, that an RSV epidemic came from such experiments and that Lyme disease “almost certainly” did. He offered no evidence for the RSV assertion. Evidence places Lyme-associated bacteria in North America tens of thousands of years before modern laboratories, and experts have found no evidence of human manufacture. RFK Jr. is equal parts ignorant and liar.
As part of Project COVID Hail Mary, the Republicans accidentally revealed their true motives. By law, Congressional hearings are fact-finding missions and are not allowed to be politically weaponized, even though there is virtually no punishment mechanisms for their political use. Fauci has testified in front of Congress more than 200 times. On July 29, he invoked the Fifth Amendment broadly, including when senators asked the date, his tie color and the carpet color. The trivial questions were intended generated numerous sworn answers that could later be searched for inconsistency with his diary. Legal experts expected Paul and his allies to comb Fauci’s answers for minor errors and refer them for prosecution.
Cruz gave the strategy away by calling for Fauci to be “prosecuted for perjury” and jailed after Fauci declined to provide new testimony. Invoking the Fifth created no perjury count. Answering could have created one. The proceeding had the practical mechanics of a perjury trap. Senators arrived with the punishment announced and sought statements that might supply a charge afterward.
Paul’s diary release produced no smoking gun, despite RFK Jr.’s absurd claims. The entries largely tracked Fauci’s public statements, including his early discussion of asymptomatic spread, China’s lack of transparency and uncertainty about the virus’s origin. A Republican-led House subcommittee spent years examining the pandemic and found no evidence linking Fauci to wrongdoing. More than 150 infectious-disease experts said no credible evidence supported the criminal accusations. The Project COVID Hail Mary campaign proceeds because prosecution functions as a political image rather than the outcome of demonstrated criminal conduct.
Trump has publicly called Fauci “a good man” and claimed Operation Warp Speed as a “monumental national achievement,” praising government, scientists and industry for developing vaccines he said would save millions. He cannot coherently claim the triumph of vaccine development while assigning the pandemic response to a rogue bureaucrat. His administration entered the crisis after dissolving the standalone National Security Council global-health directorate, reassigning its staff and shelving an inherited pandemic playbook. His action directly weakened prepared channels for coordination before Fauci became MAGA’s universal explanation.
COVID-19 killed more than seven million people worldwide, including more than 1.1 million Americans.
Project COVID Hail Mary returns MAGE to the QAnon style of politics. A totalizing theory selects one hidden villain, treats contradiction as evidence of concealment and converts unanswered questions into criminal certainty. MAGA is trying to associate Democrats with COVID while erasing Trump’s failed first presidency, Abbott’s order, Operation Warp Speed and the abandoned preparedness structure.
The administration is taking the time to once again obsess about their scapegoat instead of making groceries cheaper or reversing tariff inflation.
It is a desperate attempt to deflect and distract from a failed second term, by somehow trying to convince Americans that the failed response to COVID wasn’t Trump’s fault.
